How to Join

It is easy to become a member of Mohawk Progressive Federal Credit Union. If you are already within our field of membership by being employed by or a family member of National Grid, the New York Independent System Operators (NYISO), one of our Small Employee Groups (SEGs), a resident of the City of Schenectady or one who works or worships in the City of Schenectady, or a member of one of our associations, all you’ll have to do is fill out a membership application, provide current identification and deposit $5.00 or more in a Share Savings Account. Call, stop by or email the credit union and we’ll get you the forms necessary for membership.

If your group is not within our field of membership, contact us to find out how you can become eligible to join. Call (518) 372-0828 or toll free at (888) 387-9522 or email us at:

One of our representatives will be happy to assist you.

Once you have become a member, not only are you eligible for all the great benefits we have to offer, so are your family members. And remember, your membership is for life. Even if you move or change employers, your credit union privileges remain in tact.

Our philosophy is “Once a Member, Always a Member”.

How Credit Unions Differ From Banks.

Unlike a bank (where everyone can open an account) you must have a common bond with some or all of your fellow members in order to join your credit union. This bond is part of a basic philosophy behind credit unions: giving people of similar circumstances a chance to work together to meet their financial needs and goals.

Another important difference between credit unions and banks is that serving members’ needs is your credit union’s highest priority. By promoting thrift and making loans to members, credit unions are shining examples of people helping people.

Your credit union is the only financial institution where you come first and where your opinion matters!

What Are Some Of The Advantages Of Joining A Credit Union?

We Are Owned By Our Members – Credit Unions are co-ops, owned by members and operated in their common interest. We have no outside stockholders or investors, so our members alone benefit from our financial success.

We Exist To Serve Our Members – Credit Unions are nonprofit. We exist to serve our members, not to make money. This is why we can provide quality services at affordable prices. Our members view credit unions as a cost conscious alternative to the profit-driven financial industry.

We Are Democracy In Action – As a member/owner of a credit union you have an equal say in how your credit union is run. You exercise your rights by voting for a board of directors, which itself is made up of credit union members who volunteer their time to benefit all members.

We Are Responsive To Our Members’ Needs – Day to day we provide members with services that may not always be available elsewhere. We try to make special provisions, when possible, to help our members through trying financial situations. We also provide services to members who cannot afford or qualify for them anywhere else.

We Pool Our Resources To Benefit Members – Our members deposit money with us so that their fellow members can borrow when they need it. Unlike some financial institutions, credit unions return those deposits to the people and communities from which they are drawn. In an industry known for being highly competitive, credit unions work cooperatively, pooling resources for the research and development of cost-effective services that benefit all credit union members.

We Consistently Offer Better Rates – National studies show that credit unions offer lower rates on loans and higher rates for savings than banks or other financial institutions.

We Offer Services With Lower Fees – National studies also show that credit unions offer fewer fees for services and when fees are charged, they are lower than those charged by for-profit financial providers.

Service Is Our Number One Priority – Because service is our credit union’s number one priority, it’s not surprising that credit union members are America’s most satisfied financial consumers. This has been confirmed for the last several years by many annual nationwide surveys.

Attractive Rates…Lower Fees…Better Service…Safety For Your Savings…
